A Swedish Navy CB90 combat boat collided with a rock formation in the Gothenburg archipelago during a training exercise, leaving four people injured, two of them in serious condition.
The accident occurred near the island of Rör, while conscripts were participating in practical maneuvers to learn how to operate this type of high-speed military boat.
The investigation conducted by the Swedish Accident Investigation Authority revealed a series of serious safety failures. No crew members were wearing seat belts, and there were no protective helmets on board during the activity. Additionally, the training performed was considered too complex for the level of preparation of the involved team.
The final report also highlighted that the navigation took place under low visibility conditions, with insufficient knowledge of the navigation system, and, above all, at a speed that was too high for the situation. The Swedish Armed Forces themselves acknowledged that the crew was moving too fast, although they defend the importance of training high-speed operations even in challenging scenarios.
Another point criticized was the command structure during the incident, which hampered the rescue coordination and delayed the assistance to the victims. The commission also pointed out issues with the available equipment, such as helmets that were considered too heavy to use on board and seat belts that couldn’t absorb the force of an impact.
It is worth mentioning that the CB90 model was recently provided to the Ukrainian Navy by Sweden and Norway.
